About Louie

My name is Louie Ungaro, my Indian name is Shedulk, and I come from the Daniels and Courville families. While I am currently serving my fourth term on the Muckleshoot Tribal Council, I have tried my best to serve my community my entire life as an avid practitioner of our Tribe’s treaty rights. As an elected member of your Muckleshoot Tribal Council, I understand my role to uphold and protect our sovereignty, the preservation of our lifeways, and to provide new opportunities for our people.

In my recent term, I served as the Chair of the School Commission and found inspiration in our youth and our future leaders and worked hard to provide pathways to prepare them for their future roles as protectors of our sovereignty and traditional lifeways. I've developed a strong relationship with partners within our territory and built programs that empower our youth with our Ancestral knowledge of the lands we come from and encourage our youth to get involved in outdoor recreation.

While my focus is entirely here, in our homelands, serving our people - I also represent Muckleshoot as a Board Member for the Native American Rights Fund where I help develop strategies on some of the most challenging cases Indian Country battles. Our community has supported the work of this important organization since it began during the Boldt Decision.

I also serve as the Chair of the Food Sovereignty Committee for the Affiliated Tribes of Northwest Indians. This committee meets quarterly and represents Native people from elected positions to grassroots initiatives. I have gained key insights to how we can do better by our Native food producers in this area and can work in solidarity with our neighboring tribes to strengthen our food system.

In my next term, I really want to lean into the partnerships I've developed with federal agencies like the United States Department of Agriculture to take opportunities coming our way. In the next few years we will be seeing a lot of support thrown our way to right the imbalances of our fisheries economics. I'd also like to launch a special project, holding conversations within our community to develop a butcher shop. I know that the partnerships I've spent time growing in my four terms can help us get this done. I hope that these words I share with you, and my vision for the years to come inspires you to cast a vote for me Monday, January 15th, 2024.
